The Queensland Superkart Club is celebrating 50 years of operations in the Sunshine State, still admirably serving as the central organisation for Queensland’s superkart community with a long list of exciting developments on the horizon to finish 2025.

The club, founded back in 1975, as the Queensland Road Racing Kart Club, was formed by a group of Toowoomba kart drivers.

Fifty years later, the same club continues to run strong and continuously looking ahead to even more growth.

Queensland Superkart Club President Doug Amiss stated the club has seen plenty of other clubs come and go, emphasising the level of pride he has for his members to still be in a strong position.

“As President, what I’m most proud of is our club culture. It’s something our life members tell me hasn’t changed in 50 years, and I think that’s our biggest strength,” Amiss said.

“We’re competitive and professional, but also incredibly friendly and social. At any race weekend, you’ll see people helping each other out with tools, parts, or just pitching in to keep everyone racing.

“New members are always welcomed with open arms, and the paddock is filled with families and friends enjoying the weekend together.”

The past six months of superkarts have marked a strong start to the year with Round 1 of the club’s season exceeding expectations with an large field of 16 superkarts on the grid; more than double what the club has seen in the last couple of years.

Round 3 was another standout, with 21 entries; the club’s biggest field in nearly five years. On the track, Russell Jamieson has also been a standout driver, setting lap records at every round this year and now holds nine lap records across Queensland.

Off the track, the club will also add it newest Life Member to its long list of noted servants.

Daryl Bertram first joined the club as a founding committee member in 1975. He raced in the club’s very first meeting, and continues to support the Queensland Superkart Club today as a silver sponsor, despite living in the USA.

Amiss confirmed Bertram will make the trip back to Australia to race in the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The club was also lucky enough to have a static display at the Supercars Ipswich 440 earlier this month, which Amiss was particularly grateful for.

“It’s always great to showcase what superkarting is all about to the broader motorsport crowd,” Amiss added.

“Watching people’s reactions when they learn that our lap record is quicker than the Supercars around Queensland Raceway never gets old.”

Qld Superkart Cup – Day 2

Saturday 16th August, 2025 by Media Release

A cool and foggy morning to kick off the Qld Superkart Cup for 2025! The fog pushed the start of qualifying back 30 mins.  With fog still licking circuit qualifying got underway at 8:25am. Ewen Burg continued to build on his pace from Friday taking pole Position in his 250 International with a 1:14.0. Tim Weier put his 250 National in second place with a 1:15.1 and Tim Philp took out third overall and the leading 125 National with a blistering 1:16.5 edging red hot favourite Russell Jamieson by 0.5 with Doug Amiss another 0.5 further back.  Expect a great fight between these 3 at the front of the 125 National class.

Tony Moit leading the charge for the Rotax class clocking a 1:26.0 edging fellow southerner Stuart Roberston on a 1:27.4 the Queensland boys will have to get a move on if they want to stop those gorgeous trophies going south!

Race 1

A super quick turn around of only about 40 mins between qualifying and race 1 had a few scrambling to get themselves down to the dummy grid.  Ewen Burg lead the field into turn 1 but Tim Weier was hot on his tail and snuck past down into turn 6 on the second lap before Ewen used the extra Hp of the 250 Twin to blast past up the main straight.  The race was red flagged on lap 3 due to a couple of karts spinning and being in precarious positions. A one lap dash to complete the race saw plenty of action off the start. Tim Weier tried to execute a pass on Ewen Burg through turn 2 with the pair rubbing wheels and both of them losing momentum. Ewen recovered to take the win by 0.1 as he out dragged Tim to the finish line! Third overall was Gareth Crisp only 0.2 behind Tim.

Fourth overall and leading the 125 National Class was Tim Philp, his CRG and TM combination working a treat edging Russell Jameison (5th overall) by 0.2s and Doug Amiss was less than a second further arears in 6th.  As expected these 3 guys are set to duke it out all weekend honours.

Tony Moit (125 NGB Light) continued where he left off from qualifying taking home the class win.  Stuart Robertson (125 TAG Heavy) took the class win ahead of fellow heavy driver Andrew Cain.  The short turn around between qualifying and race 1 might have caught a few out with 7 DNF’s

Race 2

Ewen Burg (250 Int) was untouchable clearing away to take the win by over from 5 seconds from Gareth Crisp (250 Nat) who after battling with Tim Weier (250 Nat) setup an awesome drag to the finish line winning by 0.023! Russell Jamieson (125 Nat) turned the wick up on his Anderson TM to comfortably lead home by nearly 6 seconds Race 1 winner Tim Philp (125 Nat) in 5th. Doug Amiss took 6th overall after battling hard with Lauire Fooks getting to the line 0.2 ahead of Laurie.

250 Nat, Paul Snaith

Tony Moit (Light) was untouchable in his 125 Non-Gearbox clearing out by over 10 seconds from Stuart Robertson (Heavy), David Dyson (Heavy) was the next best Non-gearbox after sorting out his race 1 gremlins.

Race 3

Saturday’s victor Ewen Burg didn’t make it past lap 1 with his PVP spewing water out of the rear radiator and pulling up at turn 3 on the opening lap.  That left Gareth Crisp and Tim Weier to fight it out at the front, Tim made an early move slicing past Gareth into turn 2. Gareth quickly tucked into Tim’s draft and set up a braking duel down into turn 3 with Gareth coming out on top and quickly opened the gap as Tim faded away losing HP (turns out the carby boot started to split). Gareth would take a comfortable victory as Weier dropped back into the clutches of the two very fast 125s of Russell Jamiseon and Tim Philp. Tim managed to hang on to 2nd overall but Russell Jamieson made the most of the tow provided by Tim Weier to claim a new lap record for the 125 National class of a 1:15.735 smashing his own lap record set earlier this year of a 1:16.4.  A nice little bonus of $500 goes to Russell thanks to Ultimate Steel Framing for resetting the lap record.

Doug Amiss was 5th overall smashing his own PB ahead of Lauire Fooks in 6th and Shaun Field who in only his second race meeting is making huge leaps and bounds improving by over 4 seconds since qualifying coming home 7th overall.

Stuart Robertson was the leading Rotax driver in 11th overall ahead of fellow Rotax heavy driver David Dyson and Light competitor Jack Murray. Race 1 & 2 winner Tony Moit suffered a rare DNF.

Race 4

The final race of the weekend was being live streamed thanks to Hi-Tech Oils (see above). Tim and Gareth locked horns straight away with Tim trying to go down the inside into turn 3 but Tim had a moment and got the #89 Anderson GAS GAS very sideways and dropping back to 4th overall.  He quickly recovered and managed to get home second overall. Gareth Crisp was too fast and took another comfortable victory.

Russell Jamieson proved too fast for Tim Philp in the 125 National fight, Russell taking home the final spot on the podium ahead of Tim Philp in 4th

Doug Amiss took home a familiar 5th place once again ahead of Laurie Fooks in 6th. Kristian Stebbing had his best race of the weekend coming home 7th in his 125 National.  Nicholas Raymond took home 8th ahead of Ilya Harpas in 9th who unfortunately had a weekend to forget after a double seizure Saturday he was just happy to see the checkered flag on Sunday.

Tony Moit rebounded from his DNF in Race 3 to put some serious daylight between him and the next Rotax competitor in Stuart Robertson. Tony managed his PB for the weekend with a 1:24.46 which isn’t far from the lap record.  Andrew Cain was the third Rotax home ahead of Jack Murray and David Dyson.

What an awesome meeting and a great way to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary.  Darryl Bertram was presented with a Life Membership – he is now the official 12th Life Member of the club and very fitting given he was there for the club’s very first race meeting back in 1975 at Surfers Paradise Raceway.

A massive thanks to the committee, club members, sponsors and partners that help make this all possible!
