Joe Tyrrell and Doug Amiss Take the Honours at CAMS State Championships

The first round of the 2013 CAMS state championships took place at Morgan Park Raceway over the MG Car Club's June 23/24 weekend with visiting European based driver Doug Amiss returned to Queensland and used the trip to his advantage, dusting off the Bluff Racing Stockman MR2 to win the 125 cc class and take the QSC club championship points lead at the end of round one. Joe Tyrrell was equally if not more impressive in his 250 National class Anderson Maverick, taking two race victories to lead the CAMS Queensland championship.

Pole position on the 3.0 km long track was set by Michael Nicholas, continuing his recent good form with a 1:23.304 lap time in his 250 International Stockman MR2. Steve Cloake's Stockman MR2 was just over a second slower. Tyrrell qualified his 250 National class Anderson Maverick just five hundredths of a second behind Cloake. Doug Amiss qualified at the head of the 125 cc karts in his Stockman MR2 while Phil Silcock took fifth fastest struggling with a high-end miss that has plagued hi at recent meetings. Robert Aston was sixth fastest in his CRG Maximo.

Race one was a hard fought affair with Steve Cloake leading off the line. Michael Nicholas took the lead on the second lap but was forced to defend hard from Joe Tyrrell. The race went all the way to the line, the superior power Nicholas' Stockman falling 0.028 seconds short and Tyrrell claimed the win. Cloake was 16 seconds back in third. Amiss was a fairly lonely fourth ahead of
Silcock and Aston.

On Sunday Nicholas dropped out on the opening lap was Cloake lead from Tyrrell and Amiss. Cloake dropped to third. Tyrrell backed off in the closing laps and Amiss was just 0.6 seconds behind over the line ahead of Silcock and Aston while Cloake limped in fifth.

Silcock's ongoing electrical dramas sidelined the Stockman for Race 3 and Nicholas ripped through the field from rear of grid to lead by the end of lap one and stayed there, winning by 16 seconds. Tyrrell claimed second position ahead of Amiss and Aston who had a trouble free if lonely weekend in the CRG. Cloake dropped out on the second lap leaving just four finishers.

With the class based scoring structure, Doug Amiss consistency in the 125 cc class saw him take the early lead in the QSC Club pointscore and is 201 points ahead of Joe Tyrrell and Robert Aston.
